# 2019 Mercedes B-Class: The MPV Mercedes Nobody Considers

The Mercedes B-Class has always been the forgotten car in the Mercedes range. Walk into any pub and ask someone to name five Mercedes models. They'll say A-Class, C-Class, E-Class, GLC, maybe GLE. Nobody says B-Class. And that's exactly why it's such a smart used buy.

The 2019 model is the third-generation W247, which launched at the end of 2018 with a completely redesigned platform shared with the new A-Class. It's a genuine step up from the previous model in every measurable way, and on the used market you'll find them from **£16,000 to £22,000**: which is less than most used A-Class models of the same age because nobody's looking at them.

## Why the B-Class Deserves Your Attention

The B-Class is essentially an A-Class with a taller body. That extra height translates into:

- **Easier entry and exit**: the seating position is roughly 90 mm higher than the A-Class. If you've got dodgy knees or simply prefer not folding yourself into a low car, this matters enormously
- **455-litre boot**: that's 85 litres more than the A-Class, and the boot floor sits lower, so you can stack things higher without blocking rear visibility
- **Genuinely usable rear seats**: three adults can sit across the back without fighting for shoulder room. Headroom is generous even for passengers over six feet
- **MBUX infotainment**: the same dual-screen dashboard from the A-Class, with "Hey Mercedes" voice control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a remarkably intuitive touchpad controller

The driving experience won't set your pulse racing, but that's not the point. It's comfortable, quiet at motorway speed, and the ride quality on standard suspension is excellent over broken UK roads. Think of it as a premium people carrier in a hatchback body.

## Engine Options

### B 180 (1.3-litre turbo, 136 bhp): Dave's Pick for Most Buyers
Co-developed with Renault, this little 1.3-litre four-cylinder produces 200 Nm of torque and moves the B-Class along perfectly adequately. Real-world fuel economy sits at **42 to 48 mpg**, and insurance is group **18 to 22**. It won't win any drag races, but it handles motorway cruising, school runs, and Costco trips with zero drama. It's the most popular engine choice and the easiest to find on the used market.

### B 200 (1.3-litre turbo, 163 bhp)
Same engine block, 27 bhp more. The difference is noticeable on hill starts and motorway slip roads, but fuel economy drops slightly to **40 to 45 mpg** and insurance creeps up to group **22 to 26**. On the used market, the premium over the B 180 is typically **£1,000 to £1,500**. Worth it if you regularly carry a full car.

### B 180d (1.5-litre diesel, 116 bhp)
The diesel makes sense if, and only if. You cover **15,000+ miles per year** predominantly on motorways. Real-world economy of **55 to 62 mpg** is impressive, but the purchase premium and DPF maintenance costs wipe out the saving at lower mileages. Insurance group **17 to 21**. Make sure any diesel has had regular long runs to keep the DPF healthy.

### B 200d (2.0-litre diesel, 150 bhp)
The larger diesel is punchy and refined but pushing into insurance group **25 to 29** territory. Only consider this if you tow a trailer or caravan, the 320 Nm of torque makes it a relaxed tower. Most people won't need it.

## Common Problems on the 2019 B-Class

### Renault-Sourced Engine Concerns
The 1.3 TFSI petrol engines (B 180 and B 200) are built in partnership with Renault. Early production units had reports of excessive oil consumption and occasional timing chain rattle. Mercedes issued a technical service bulletin to address these issues, ask the selling dealer to confirm this has been done. A timing chain replacement runs **£800 to £1,200** if needed.

### MBUX Software Bugs
The first-generation MBUX system (which is what 2019 models run) can experience screen freezes, Bluetooth disconnections, and sat-nav lag. Mercedes has released multiple over-the-air updates, check the software version is current. If not, a dealer update costs **£100 to £180**.

### Suspension Creaks
Some B-Class W247 models develop a creak from the front suspension over speed bumps. Usually traced to the anti-roll bar drop links or the top strut mounts, **£80 to £150** per side to fix. Check the [MOT history](https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history) for suspension-related advisories.

### Automatic Gearbox Hesitation
The 7G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox (standard on all models) can be hesitant from a standstill, particularly in stop-start traffic. It's a characteristic of dual-clutch boxes rather than a fault, but test-drive in urban traffic before committing. If the hesitation is excessive, a gearbox software update (**£150 to £200**) usually improves it.

### Rear Brake Disc Corrosion
If the car sits for extended periods (common with older drivers who make up much of the B-Class buyer base), the rear brake discs can corrode visibly. Light surface rust is normal, but deep pitting requires new discs, **£180 to £300** fitted.

## Running Costs (B 180 Sport)

| Cost | Annual Estimate |
|------|----------------|
| Fuel (10,000 miles at ~45 mpg) | **£1,500** |
| Insurance (group 18 to 22) | **£500 to £950** |
| Road tax | **£155** |
| Servicing (Service A/B rotation) | **£250 to £450** |
| Tyres (205/55 R17) | **£300 to £480** per set |
| Annual total | **£2,705 to £3,535** |

Those numbers are remarkably competitive. The B-Class is actually cheaper to run than the A-Class in most configurations because it sits on smaller wheels (17-inch versus 18-inch on equivalent A-Class Sport models) and the insurance groups are a touch lower. For broader Mercedes running cost context, compare with my Mercedes A-Class guide.

## Trim Guide

| Trim | Used Price (2019, 25k miles) | Key Features |
|------|------------------------------|-------------|
| Sport | **£16,000 to £19,000** | 17" alloys, sport seats, MBUX with twin screens, active brake assist |
| AMG Line | **£18,500 to £22,000** | 18" AMG alloys, AMG body kit, lowered sport suspension, diamond-pattern grille |

The **Sport** trim is the one to buy. It has everything you need, the ride quality is better on standard suspension, and the 17-inch wheels are cheaper to replace. The AMG Line looks sportier but the firmer suspension undermines the B-Class's main strength, comfort.

## Who Should Buy a B-Class?

The B-Class is perfect for:
- **Families** who want premium build quality without the impracticality of a low-slung hatchback
- **Older drivers** who appreciate the higher seating position and easier access
- **Anyone** who values comfort and refinement over sporty driving dynamics
- **Downsizers** from larger MPVs who still want genuine passenger and boot space

It's not for you if you want a car that feels exciting to drive. The steering is light and numb, the handling is competent but uninspiring, and the 1.3-litre engine won't quicken your pulse. But as a tool for moving people and their belongings in comfort, it's genuinely excellent.

## What to Check Before Buying

1. **Service history**: Mercedes Service A and B alternate. Confirm the schedule has been followed using the digital service book
2. **Software version**: check MBUX is running the latest firmware
3. **Timing chain**: on petrol models, listen for any rattle on cold start. Check if the Mercedes TSB has been applied
4. **Interior condition**: the B-Class interior wears well, but check the driver's seat bolster for rubbing, especially on light-coloured leather
5. **Verify the spec**: some 2019 B-Classes were pre-facelift and some post. The easiest tell is the steering wheel design. Both are good but the post-facelift is marginally better equipped

Check the car's [DVLA details](https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla) and run a [vehicle history check](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-valuation) before viewing. The B-Class holds its value reasonably well for an MPV, and you can verify current market pricing on [Auto Trader](https://www.autotrader.co.uk).

## Dave's Verdict

The 2019 Mercedes B-Class is one of the most underrated cars on the used market. It offers genuine Mercedes quality, a practical interior, low running costs, and prices that reflect the fact that nobody's looking for them. Buy the **B 180 Sport** with **under 35,000 miles** and you'll have a premium family car that costs less to run than most mainstream rivals. Sometimes the smartest buy is the car nobody else wants.

If you need more space, consider the Skoda Kodiaq for seven seats on a budget. And if you prefer the SUV body style, my [Audi Q2 guide](https://www.carbuyeriq.com/guides/vehicle-model-insights/2019-audi-q2-smallest-audi-suv-worth-buying) covers a similar-sized premium alternative.
